Use-of-Force Continuum
Gilmore Method Eskrima is free of frills and flashy techniques. It is a self-defense oriented system of Eskrima. The ethical standards of GME are informed by the warrior traditions of the Philippines and the Americas. The coaches and students of Gilmore Method Eskrima strive every day to live those ethics in and out of the school environment.
There are three complete systems that comprise the curriculum of Gilmore Method Eskrima. Weapons Training, Dirty Boxing, and Grappling (also called Opponent Control and Restraint). Each of these systems is designed to evolve with the needs, characteristics, and attributes of each student. This enables each student to develop his own “style” within these systems; it allows you to make Gilmore Method Eskrima your own.
Gilmore Method Eskrima is primarily concerned with Self-Defense training rather than Martial Sport. This concern is guided by the appropriate use of force.
It is a simple fact that not all self-defense situations demand overwhelming force, and to use such force in those situations can result in your incarceration and psychological damage. The central goal of Gilmore Method Eskrima training is to spontaneously respond to an attacker’s motion and intention using no more than the appropriate level of force.
Each of the three systems of Gilmore Method Eskrima is built on the following five level continuum of force:

Each of the three systems of Gilmore Method Eskrima is built on the following five level continuum of force:
- Physical Comportment is the first level. To put it simply, do not look like prey. There are techniques for this but the most
convincing element is honest physical and mental confidence. All of the training in GME is designed to improve your physical and mental confidence. - The ability to interact verbally under duress is the second level of the use of force. Everything from verbal commands to verbal de-escalation through mode of speech falls under this heading.
- Controlling a Friend is the third level of the use of force. It is designed on the concept of the “drunk uncle” where you are in a situation where you do not want to damage the person, but the person must be restrained before he does damage to himself or someone else.
- Non-Lethal Structural Damage (bone-breaking, joint dislocations, attacking the nervous system, and attacking the breath) is the fourth level of the use of force for GME.
- Lethal Self-Defense is the fifth level of the GME use of force model.
